Dental (dental) crowns - description and purpose
A dental crown is a non-removable orthopedic construction that completely anatomically restores the visible part of the tooth with restoration of chewing function and external aesthetic appearance. Crowns are installed when the tooth is destroyed by 50% or more. It is made individually according to the color and shape of the patient’s teeth and visually practically does not differ from the rest of the patient’s teeth.
Currently, two types of crowns are mainly used:
A ceramic coating is applied to the metal frame. This is both a budget method of tooth restoration, and at the same time provides high strength due to the use of metal, and the ceramic coating provides a natural visual appearance. Metal-ceramic - The most budget option, but due to the fact that the metal can shine through a little, it has a less natural look. It is optimal to install on the lateral chewing part.
These crowns provide the best external aesthetics due to the possibility of the most accurate matching to the color of the patient's teeth. Such a crown is practically impossible to distinguish from the rest of the patient's teeth. Both ceramic and zirconium crowns have the same cost and differ only in the composition of the material. Metal-free ceramic or zirconium- are made of biologically inert material and provide the highest natural appearance. It is optimal to install on the front (visible) part of the tooth row.
Other types of crowns, such as, for example, plastic ones, are outdated today and are not offered to the patient.
Does the type of crown installed depend on the clinical case?
Metal-ceramic crowns can be integral, metal-free crowns can replace both the fully visible part of the tooth and only its destroyed part. When installing ceramic and zirconium crowns, much less living tooth tissue is removed compared to metal-ceramic crowns.

The steps of installation do not depend on the material of the crown and are the same for both metal-ceramic and metal-free crowns. The differences in the stages depend on whether the crown is installed on the root of the tooth or on the implant.
Stages of crown installation on a tooth root
An examination of the patient’s problem tooth is performed, an X-ray is taken, the condition of the roots is checked, whether there are no inflammatory processes.
If there are no inflammatory processes, preparations are being made to install the crown. A severely decayed tooth may require the placement of an iconic tab or fiberglass post.
An impression is taken, the color is selected and it goes to the laboratory, where a crown is made within 5 days. Dental crowns are made only individually for the patient.
After 5 days, the crown is ready and a fitting is done. If the shape and color suit the patient, the crown is fixed on a permanent basis.
Stages of crown installation on an implant
First, we wait for the implant to take root.
Then the patient is fitted with a gum former, which he wears for 14 days.
The impression is taken, the color is selected and it goes to the laboratory, where the crown is made within 5 days. Dental crowns are made only individually for the patient.
After 5 days, the crown is ready and a fitting is done. If the shape and color suit the patient, the crown is fixed on a permanent basis.
